These photos were taken in the Lembeh and Raja Ampat areas of Indonesia in late Nov. & early Dec., 2006.
Mantis shrimp (4-6 inches long) - uses his front claws (tucked under like a praying mantis) to lash out and stun/kill prey. Supposedly, this snapping of his claws is one of the fastest actions in all of nature, earning this fellow the nickname "thumb-cracker" because it is capable of shattering the bones in a human hand
