UNDERWATER REFLECTIONS > Shadows and Light - Caribbean reef shark (Bahamas)
UNDERWATER REFLECTIONS > Award-winning "Cheshire Cat Grin" - A 7-foot lemon shark on the surface at sunset (you can see the orange sunset through the water). This photo - winner of the Oceans division of Nature's Best Photography's 2008 Windland Smith Rice Awards - is currently on display in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Of all the photos I've ever taken, I think this one has evoked the most comments and interest...probably because of the shark's apparent "expression," which can best be described by reference to the cat in Alice's Wonderland. See last page of this gallery for a few photos from the Smithsonian exhibit!

UNDERWATER REFLECTIONS > I was very fortunate to get this shot of a classic scene -- a big male brown bear "fishing" atop the Brooks River falls. This was definitely my best shot of the trip.

CAMERAS - Photos in this gallery were taken with four cameras: Canon 1D Mark IIN for most bear shots; Canon 5D for wide angle; Canon 20D (Cheri's); and Panasonic/Lumix LX2 ("point & shoot" for pocket use). Most bear shots were taken with a Canon 500mm f/4 lens, often supplemented by a 1.4X or 2X teleconverter (for effective focal lengths of 700mm or 1000mm).
UNDERWATER REFLECTIONS > Mantis shrimp (4-6 inches long) - uses his front claws (tucked under like a praying mantis) to lash out and stun/kill prey. Supposedly, this snapping of his claws is one of the fastest actions in all of nature, earning this fellow the nickname "thumb-cracker" because it is capable of shattering the bones in a human hand
UNDERWATER REFLECTIONS > "Mommm? What do we do now?"

This was our favorite shot of the trip, due in large part to the standing cub's implied message.

Photos in this gallery were taken with three Canon DSLR cameras: 1Ds Mark II, 1D Mark II-N, and 20D. Polar bear photos were taken with long lenses from bobbing zodiaks, so very high shutter speeds were necessary to try to freeze the action.
