A sow and two cubs walk along the shore in the marshy area near the bridge. Cubs remain with their mothers for 3-4 years (these appear to be 2-3 yrs old). Mothers protect cubs from adult males, which will kill and eat cubs if/when they have a chance. As a result, sows with cubs are extremely alert and defensive. For that reason, park visitors are required to maintain a distance of at least 100 yards from any sow with cubs, as compared to the 50 yard distance with other bears.
Cubs play/fish near their mother. Although they seldom actually catch anything, they occasionally do, and can always eat some of their mother's catch when they don't.
