Yellow-headed Jawfish (Cayman Islands) are small (3 inch long) fish that have an ethereal look as they hover above their holes in the sand, into which they bolt at any sign of danger. They have long been one of my favorite type of fish.
A male yellow-headed jawfish (Cayman Islands) holds eggs in his mouth to protect them until they hatch.
Jawfish hold eggs in their mouths until they hatch, and once every few minutes, will quickly spit them out (as here) and then suck them back in again in a split second, in order to make sure all of the eggs get plenty of oxygenated water.
